Wednesdays at the Canteen

A special Menù

The council of representatives together with the principal decided to make changes to the menu on Wednesday to have more “varied” foods.

As Julius Caesar said “De gustibus non est disputandum,” which means that tastes are not debatable. For this reason it was determined that on Wednesdays the menu has dishes usually enjoyed by more people. Every first Wednesday of the month the Hamburger is served, the second the Piadina, the third the Hotdog and finally on the last Wednesday the Kebab.

Hamburger

On the first Wednesday of the month the Hamburger is served in the cafeteria: this iconic dish originated in Germany, in Hamburg. There, however, they invented only the meat patty, while the Hamburger as we know it today: with bread, salad, tomato, in short whatever you want, was invented in America. Our cafeteria offers us a simpler but still good hamburger, you can add sauces, and of course for those who don't want to eat it, there is the very tasty option of plain pasta.

Kebap

Kabap(in Turkish) or kebab(in Persian) is the typical food of the Middle East. This dish originated in the Middle Ages, when Ottoman soldiers, after long marches, would skewer mutton or lamb in their swords to refresh themselves and spin them around a fire. From this tradition came Kebab as we know it today.

Hot dog

Hotdog, a simple sandwich famous all over the world, was chosen as one of the four foods on the Wednesday menu.

The hotdog originated in Germany and Austria; the traditional recipe in addition to bread and sausage includes mustard, sauerkraut, onions, and cheese. Our cafeteria serves us a simpler sandwich in case we do not like any of these ingredients. Ours therefore has only a frankfurter, a soft bun, and if you want you can add extra sauces.

Piadina

The piadina was included as a representative of Italian cuisine; our canteen offers us the traditional one.

Many of us know that it has Romagna origins, and Giovanni Pascoli even refers to it as the 'national food' of the people of Romagna. In fact, the bread seems to have originated in ancient Rome as a more humble bread because it did not require so many ingredients for preparation. In contrast, piadina as we know it today, that is, with ham and cheese, originated in the Middle Ages.

These are just a few of the new dishes we have been offered , but there will be many more in the coming weeks. Keep reading to find out what's coming next!
