Two students who recently participated in the Model United Nations Frankfurt share their experience:

Margherita P.

Hi, my name is Margherita P., and I’m a student of Second ICE program at Vittoria International School. I participated in the MainMUN conference representing Mongolia in the Commission Status of Women (CSW). I had the opportunity to learn more about women rights in Mongolia, a country geographically far from Italy and with cultural, traditional, political beliefs different from our own.

There were many challenges such as – sustaining ideas we didn’t really believed in and being the youngest in the committee. It certainly wasn't easy, but from the moment I entered the committee room, I found myself next to young adults discussing and debating topics of international relevance. I listened to the stories of their countries and learned more about our world.

Even though the topic wasn't one of the easiest, we had built a sort of community, where despite our countries differences, we fought for women's rights. I am a woman, and having the opportunity to speak out and address the rights that are still being denied to us was truly incredible. I learned what it means for a woman to have “Access to Reproductive Health and Rights” , and how crucial this is in our daily lives.

Although I was the youngest, we were all strangers to each other which made it easier, and I immediately met some truly incredible people. During the long hours of session, one of the best parts were certainly the “moderated caucuses" in which we debated between countries about the topic we had chosen ourselves. Perhaps the most difficult part was writing and voting on the resolution paper – we had very different ideas and reaching an agreement wasn’t easy. In the end we succeeded, and that made the experience even more rewarding.

So, this is how the day went by… we started the day by meeting and chatting outside of the building where the conference took place with all our friends, both from school and new. Then we entered the room, greeted the chairs and then the formal session officially began. We started with the roll call, which honestly was one of my favourite parts as you get to know countries you have never heard of before, then, we opened the speakers list where we introduced our countries’ opinion and position on the debated topics. Our topics were preserving forests while promoting sustainable deforestation and international cooperation between nations, to this also the crisis topic- climate change- was added. Subsequently, we moved on with points and motions on the floor, which often included moderated and unmoderated caucuses. In mods we debated and it was very interesting, while in unmods we wrote down resolutions, which was harder yet still fun. Between passing of motions and some coffee breaks in the end, it has been a truly wonderful experience.
